SURPRISE sends huge congratulations to Andrea Ghez, Nobel Prize in Physics 2020!
The Nobel Prize in Physics 2020 was divided, one half awarded to Roger Penrose “for the discovery that black hole formation is a robust prediction of the general theory of relativity”, the other half jointly to Reinhard Genzel and Andrea Ghez “for the discovery of a supermassive compact object at the centre of our galaxy.”
All of these scientists are amazing, but Andrea Ghez more so for overcoming the gender barriers that still exist in cutting edge STEM sectors. In fact, Professor Ghez is only the 4th woman ever to win the Nobel Prize in Physics. Have a look here at the 57 women that have won the Nobel Prize between 1901 and 2020. Only one of them has won it twice. Remember which amazing woman that was??
You can hear a telephone interview with Professor Ghez here and here is one of the many articles you can read to find out about the work leading to this prize.
